Research Lines

  • Religion and Culture: This research area combines the interests of several professors at the Institute. Temporally, it covers the period from the High Middle Ages to the contemporary era, and geographically, it encompasses Europe and the Americas. Thematically, it focuses on the relationship between Christian religion and culture, considering culture broadly, including everyday life, material culture, art, politics, and law.
  • History of Chile and the Americas: This research area promotes the development of themes from various perspectives, including political, social, cultural, and religious history. While not neglecting the analysis of specific local aspects, it emphasizes a comparative and transnational approach, especially in areas related to the other two lines of the program, namely “Religion and Culture” and “Contemporary History.” It also seeks to establish connections with institutions and historians specialized in the region.
  • Contemporary History: This research area focuses primarily on Western developments of the 20th and 21st centuries, with a particular emphasis on studying cultural phenomena. Additionally, it examines the representation, interactions, and reception of critical processes in European history during this period in Latin America, especially in the history of Chile. As such, this line aims to go beyond a strictly Eurocentric perspective and engage more broadly in World history.
